Kathryn Icenhower named as one of top 50 influential women in Los Angeles.

Today, Tuesday September 27, 2011, Los Angeles Magazine hosts a luncheon to honor the Top 50 Influential Women in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Magazine chose ten women who make an impact in L.A. every day and asked them to name other women who do the same. Olga Garay, the Executive Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs nominated Kathyrn Icenhower, Executive Director of SHIELDS for Families.

Garay says, “Before Kathryn Icenhower cofounded  SHIELDS for Families, many women avoided drug rehab centers because they feared their children would be taken away. Now, due to this former South L.A. social worker, there’s a family-friendly model for treatment.”

We salute Katrhyn Icenhower for her work over the years and thank Los Angeles Magazine and Olga Garay for their continued support.

Dr. Tessa Philips Conference: Shifting Perspectives on the Personal and Clinical: Race, Place and Self in the Modern World

My work grew from the realization that my young life in apartheid South Africa was impacting on my ability to relate fully to my patients in my work as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Sydney. This presentation follows on from my recent paper, Race, Place and Self in the Experience of a Bystander published in The International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Vol. 6,No. 3, (2011). Again the examples and narratives relate to South Africa, but the principles that emerge have far-reaching, even universal implications. They apply to scars that are the legacy of being raised in an autocratic state. The ramifications of being a member of the white oppressing class by virtue of birth can never be erased, and issues of atonement, bystanding, personal responsibility, culpability and guilt endure. My aim is to examine those feelings that endure, using the tools of my therapeutic trade.

Our heart goes out to her family and friends as they mourn her passing yesterday.

SHIELDS 20th Year Retrospective

REMINISCE verb \ËŒre-mÉ™-ˈnis\  recall to mind of a long-forgotten experience or fact, a remembered experience

2011 marks SHIELDS for Families' 20th anniversary. After incorporating in 1991, SHIELDS rapidly grew from 1 program and 3 staff located in a trailer at Martin Luther King/Drew Hospital to 34 programs and 350 staff throughout 15 locations today.

To commemorate this occasion, we are taking a look back at all of the experiences of our extended family of clients, staff, stakeholders and patrons that have made us a leader in helping families in South Los Angeles beat the odds, foster hope, accomplish goals, achieve dreams and become productive members of the community.

RECOLLECT verb \ËŒre-kÉ™-ˈlekt\ to bring back to the level of conscious awareness

SHIELDS Development Department is in the process of collecting and cataloging SHIELDS memorabilia to assemble a twenty year retrospective yearbook. But we need your help. We especially want your stories; personal stories of triumph, memories of clients and/or staff whom are no longer with us, recollections of major events: were you in treatment during the Rodney King Riots (1992) or the September 11 Attacks (2011), how did the campaign and eventual election of President Obama (2008) effect your journey... we would love to know!

REQUISITE adj \ˈre-kwÉ™-zÉ™t\ essential, necessary

All materials submitted to the Development Department for the 20 Year Retrospective Yearbook Project will be returned intact to their original owner in a timely manner.

It is the duty of the SHIELDS to strictly adhere to HIPPA confidentiality laws. All photographs and any identifiable characteristic of SHIELDS program participants (past or present) must be accompanied by a signed release form.

Congrats! SHIELDS for Families Executive Director Dr. Kathryn Icenhower appointed by Speaker of the Assembly John A. Pérez to the California Children and Families Commission

This month, Speaker of the Assembly John A. Pérez named Kathryn Icenhower, PhD, LCSW – Executive Director of SHIELDS for Families - as one of his appointees to the California Children and Families Commission.  Kris Perry of First 5 California states, “Dr. Icenhower brings a wealth of experience, commitment, and leadership to the field of children, youth, and families.”  First 5 California’s Commission is made up of seven members appointed by the Governor, the Speaker of the Assembly and the Senate Rules Committee. The Secretaries of the California Health and Human Services Agency and Education also appoint two additional ex-officio members to the Commission.

According to the First 5 CA website www.ccfc.ca.gov : “Californians believe that our state’s children are a top priority. That’s why in 1998 voters passed Proposition 10, adding a 50-cent tax to each pack of cigarettes sold to create First 5 California, also known as the California Children and Families Commission. First 5 California is dedicated to improving the lives of California’s young children and their families through a comprehensive system of education, health services, childcare, and other crucial programs. Since its creation nearly a decade ago, First 5 California has brought these critical services to millions of parents, caregivers and children ages 0 to 5, and we’re striving to reach thousands more every day.” (http://www.ccfc.ca.gov/commission/about_us.asp).

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Kathryn Icenhower on this honor and in thanking Speaker Pérez for appointing her. We know Dr. Icenhower will do an excellent job advocating for the children and families of California as a member of the California Children and Families Commission.

Demand Facebook Remove Pages That Promote Sexual Violence

Facebook says that hate speech and incitements to violence are banned and will be removed from their site. So why are they maintaining a page called "Riding Your Girlfriend Softly Cause You Don't Want to Wake Her Up"? And another page about "throwing bricks at sluts" that includes a photo gallery of portraits asking "Bang or Brick"?

There has even been an organized effort to use Facebook’s own reporting system to flag these and other pages that encourage rape and violence against women so they’ll be taken down. But Facebook hasn’t done a thing.

Now, Change.org member John Raines is going straight to the top. He started a petition on Change.org telling Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to take down these pages and take a stronger stand against violence against women.

Will you sign John’s petition to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg? Sign on, and tell Facebook to remove pages promoting rape and violence against women now.

When 1 in 3 American women will be sexually abused and/or assaulted in her lifetime, pages like these -- and the reactions they elicit -- are downright scary. Tens of thousands of people have "liked" these pages. Some people even use them as platforms to share rape fantasies and receive explicit tactics for how to carry them out.

John has seen the devastating impact of sexual violence and rape firsthand, on his own family. That's why he created this petition on Change.org to get Facebook to enforce its existing policies and to make it clear that content promoting rape and violence against women violates Facebook's Terms of Service and won't be tolerated.

Please sign John's petition. Tell Facebook to stop providing a platform to promote rape and violence against women.

17th Annual Sandplay Therapy Workshop Announcement

Kedren Acute Psychiatric Hospital Community
Mental Health Center Presents:
17th Annual Sandplay Therapy Workshop

Art, Drama and Sandplay Therapy:
Healing Through Metaphor
Friday November 18, 2011

J. Alfred Cannon Auditorium
4211 S. Avalon Blvd. Los Angeles, CA

Course Overview
For children, play is instinctual behavior and the most natural mode of expression. Through play, children explore, create, process emotions, rehearse roles, master skills and integrate their experiences of mind and body. Symbolic play and the use of metaphor allow both children and adults an alternative way to express their inner and outer worlds indirectly, thus allowing them to tell their stories while maintaining a safe distance from traumatic material.

Sandplay Therapy is a powerful, non-verbal treatment modality that facilitates the psyche’s natural healing capacity.  Through the use of sand, water and miniature figures which represent the world, the client uses symbols and metaphor to create their personal story.  Healing takes place at a deep intuitive level, thus allowing healthy growth and development to be restored.

Drama Therapy is the intentional use of drama and/or theatre processes to achieve therapeutic goals. It is an active, experiential and embodied form of therapy offering opportunities for expression, insight and catharsis. Metaphor and symbolism are borne of externalizing tools such as art, masks, original or published texts, music, ritual and puppets which help clients explore a real life repertoire of roles.  It is the application of a creative medium in psychotherapy and an alternative to verbal therapy and like other creative arts therapies, it can be a diagnostic tool assessing cognitive or personality organization in a client.

Course Objectives
  • To learn the basic tenets of sandplay therapy and drama therapy through experiential and group participation
  • To integrate sandplay, art and story-making into healing childhood trauma through clinical application
  • To increase the capacity to reflect and understand how the use of metaphor brings about healing and movement in the psyche
  • To explore how sandplay and the expressive arts compliment talk and cognitive therapies, and facilitate left/right brain integration

Presenters
Janet Blaser, MFT—Ms. Blaser is a therapist in San Pedro using sandplay with children and adults.  She is an analytic candidate at the C.G. Jung Study Center.  Before becoming a therapist, Ms. Blaser was a toy designer with Mattel, designing among other toys, Mermaid Barbie.

She has a private practice and provides supervision and sandplay training to Kedren staff.  Ms. Luttrell has also authored two psychotherapeutic children’s books titled “Why Me?” and “What’s Wrong with Our Mom?”.

Developing Practices and Interventions to Address Violence in Our Communities

COURSE OVERVIEW
In 2009 the U.S. Department of Justice estimated that there were 30,000 distinct gangs with over 800,000 members significantly impacting at least 2,500 communities across the United States.  Los Angeles has been dubbed the “Gang Capital of America” with an estimated 150,000 gang members.
In recent years Los Angeles has developed many programs to address gangs and gang activity including gang abatement, injunctions, social programs and early intervention.  Few programs have been as successful in ‘rehabilitating’ gang members as the privately founded and developed Homeboy Industries which is the brainchild of Fr. Gregory Boyle, S.J.  Homeboy Industries has it roots in ‘Jobs for a Future’ and Fr. Greg’s philosophy that “Nothing Stops a Bullet Like a Job”.
“Developing Practices and Interventions to Address Violence in Our Communities” will address issues of the gang culture in Los Angeles as well as developing practices for personal safety in the home and on our streets.

Course Objectives
To understand and develop strategies in working with gang members and in gang     neighborhoods
To explore the dynamics behind gang participation
To explore the role of family in gang participation
To develop strategies for personal safety and crime prevention through experiential and group participation

PRESENTERS
Father Gregory Boyle, S.J. is a Jesuit priest and founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries, the Los Angeles agency that helps gang members leave gangs by helping them with job training, employment, tattoo removal, mental health and case management services.  Fr. Greg has provided ministry to jail, prison and juvenile hall inmates as well as to parishioners in East Los Angeles at Delores Mission Church.   Fr. Greg Boyle was born in Los Angeles, graduated from Loyola High School, received his BA in English from Gonzaga University, an MA in English from Loyola Marymount University, a Master of Divinity from the Weston School of Theology, and a Sacred Theology Masters degree from the Jesuit School of Theology.  Prior to becoming Pastor of Dolores Mission, he taught at Loyola High School and worked with Christian Base Communities in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Homeboy/Homegirl Staff  TBA

Bob Byrnes received a degree in Economics from SDSU.  For the past 10 years Bob has spoken to over 75,000 people in schools, Fortune 500 companies and government agencies about crime prevention in a dynamic, entertaining and interactive manner.
