Today is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day,

Today is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, a day to promote positive youth development, resilience, and recovery for children and youth with serious mental health needs. This year, the national theme focuses on building resilience in young children dealing with trauma.

Why Building Resilience in Young Children Dealing With Trauma Matters

When exposed to a traumatic event, children as young as 18 months can have serious emotional and behavioral problems later in childhood and in adulthood. More than 35 percent of children exposed to a single traumatic event will develop serious mental health problems.

With help from families, providers, and the community, young children can demonstrate resilience when dealing with trauma. Learn more about childhood trauma and post-traumatic stress syndrome, and pass it on to observe National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.

Find out how community-based and trauma-informed services provided by SAMHSA-funded programs improve the behavioral and emotional health of children dealing with trauma.

Join millions in celebrating the day by watching a national webcast of our tribute to resilience or by sharing your Awareness Day experiences via Twitter using the hashtag #1in5 or following @samhsagov.
