Congratulations to Jimmy Jimenez, a client of the SHIELDS ARK Program, for winning the 2012 Al-Impics Theme Contest!

Every year SHIELDS participates in the AL-Impics, a sort of Olympic games for individuals, families, and agencies involved with treatment and recovery. This year, the AL-Impics Planning Committee held a theme contest and out of 126 submissions -  the entry for “Join the Dance of Life” by SHIELDS ARK Program client Jimmy Jimenez was chosen as the official theme for the 2012 Los Angeles AL-Impics. The theme is a central unifying factor among the various participating agencies and individuals. Join the Dance of Life will be used on team uniforms, banners, in the official program, and on other event materials and [Jimmy] will be recognized during the opening ceremonies. Mental Illness Awareness Week

October 2-8 is Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) and an opportunity to learn more about mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.  Advocates across the country sponsor a variety of events to promote community outreach and public education concerning mental illnesses. The aim of the week is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and dispel some of the fears we have about people with mental illness. Congress established the first MIAW in 1990 in recognition of the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to raise awareness about mental illnesses.

Mental illness can affect anyone. In fact, one in four adults will experience a mental disorder in any given year. Help us spread the important message that mental illnesses are medical illnesses, and treatment is available.

Kathryn Icenhower named as one of top 50 influential women in Los Angeles.

Today, Tuesday September 27, 2011, Los Angeles Magazine hosts a luncheon to honor the Top 50 Influential Women in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Magazine chose ten women who make an impact in L.A. every day and asked them to name other women who do the same. Olga Garay, the Executive Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs nominated Kathyrn Icenhower, Executive Director of SHIELDS for Families.

Garay says, “Before Kathryn Icenhower cofounded  SHIELDS for Families, many women avoided drug rehab centers because they feared their children would be taken away. Now, due to this former South L.A. social worker, there’s a family-friendly model for treatment.”

We salute Katrhyn Icenhower for her work over the years and thank Los Angeles Magazine and Olga Garay for their continued support.
