Kathryn Icenhower named as one of top 50 influential women in Los Angeles.

Today, Tuesday September 27, 2011, Los Angeles Magazine hosts a luncheon to honor the Top 50 Influential Women in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Magazine chose ten women who make an impact in L.A. every day and asked them to name other women who do the same. Olga Garay, the Executive Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs nominated Kathyrn Icenhower, Executive Director of SHIELDS for Families.

Garay says, “Before Kathryn Icenhower cofounded  SHIELDS for Families, many women avoided drug rehab centers because they feared their children would be taken away. Now, due to this former South L.A. social worker, there’s a family-friendly model for treatment.”

We salute Katrhyn Icenhower for her work over the years and thank Los Angeles Magazine and Olga Garay for their continued support.

Dr. Tessa Philips Conference: Shifting Perspectives on the Personal and Clinical: Race, Place and Self in the Modern World

My work grew from the realization that my young life in apartheid South Africa was impacting on my ability to relate fully to my patients in my work as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Sydney. This presentation follows on from my recent paper, Race, Place and Self in the Experience of a Bystander published in The International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Vol. 6,No. 3, (2011). Again the examples and narratives relate to South Africa, but the principles that emerge have far-reaching, even universal implications. They apply to scars that are the legacy of being raised in an autocratic state. The ramifications of being a member of the white oppressing class by virtue of birth can never be erased, and issues of atonement, bystanding, personal responsibility, culpability and guilt endure. My aim is to examine those feelings that endure, using the tools of my therapeutic trade.

SHIELDS Remembers Vesta Williams

Today, SHIELDS remembers R&B singer Vesta Williams. Vesta was known for her powerful voice when she hit the scene in the 1980’s and most recently performed at a benefit concert honoring the 18th anniversary for the Institute for Maximum Human Potential which highlighted the work of SHIELDS Executive Director Kathy Icenhower.

Our heart goes out to her family and friends as they mourn her passing yesterday.
